As a runner who has grown to love running in Kansas City, I’m familiar with all the joys and pains of the sport. Running is an amazing form of exercise that has been proven to reduce stress and boost endorphins. However, with any exercise there is always a risk of injury. Today I want to pass along my wisdom to help other runners avoid common injuries while running in Kansas City.
One of the most common running injuries is shin splints due to inflammation of the muscle or tendon that is connected to the shin bone. To reduce the risk of shin splints and other running injuries, it is important that you invest in the right pair of running shoes. Shoes that fit correctly provide the right amount of cushion and support needed while running on hard surfaces.
In addition to proper footwear, be sure to warm up and cool down properly. Taking the time to stretch before and after a run will help alleviate tightness and improve range of motion. Also remember to vary your route. Running the same route over and over again changes the strain put on your body and can lead to injury. It is important to change up your running route in order to avoid muscle strain.
Most importantly, listen to your body. If your body tells you something is wrong, then take the time to rest, ice, and stretch the affected area. Don’t ignore red flags and continue to push yourself to the point of injury.
Overall, there are plenty of tips to help keep you safe while running in Kansas City. Invest in proper running shoes, warm up and cool down properly, vary your running route, and most importantly, listen to your body. If you follow these simple steps, you will be able to stay safe and enjoy your running experience.
